How Did My Internet Get Reset Back to Wep?

I understand nobody uses WEP but I needed it to be WEP just for a short amount of time to connect on something that apparently only used WEP. It wasn't going to be permanent, and I read that it was relatively easy to just switch, and I figured I could change it back after.
I have a netgear router, I went into routerlogin.net and then changed the settings to WEP and provided a new password. I hit "apply" and then it started loading, and then just lost internet. I still have no internet now as far as wireless goes, and I have no clue how to get it back.

Your wireless devices aren't connecting because they're still configured to use the (I assume) WPA2 you previously had set up. They're trying to authenticate with your access point (router) with WPA2 and whatever that password was, but your AP is now configured with WEP. If you know the WEP passphrase, just go into your wireless devices and connect them to the network with your new WEP passphrase.
Please let me know if this works for you.
BTW, whenever you're done with whatever you're doing, change back to WPA2 as soon as possible. WEP is incredibly easy to hack. Your network is vulnerable while you have WEP enabled.

It doesn't even connect. The thing I was trying to connect with finds it but just doesn't work upon trying to connect, and my laptop that I was originally using the network on technically finds it but it has an "X" and just says the connection is limited and now that I've put in the key and it is connected and shows full bars, the icon in the bottom right of my screen shows a caution triangle with an exclamation mark and I can't load any webpages or do anything.
In my network list on my laptop when I click it and try to connect it loads and then says "Connection is limited" and then I get offered to troubleshoot through help & support.

Laptop is Windows 8.1, 64-bit.
Both the things I'm trying to connect on seem to just find the network but then deem it unsatisfactory or something, like there's no proper signal. I don't understand why if all I did was change it to WEP.

I would reset the Modem router back to default and re enter all your provider details using quicksetup guide.
Then when all is done - do a backup of the settings via the modem settings.
Then you can change what you want , and just recall the backup after.
As for laptop not connecting , i would uninstall the wireless device from Device Manager , then reconfigure the modem via an ethernet cable { As Above Step } , then when done reboot the laptop , and connect to wireless with key you chose and see if it then works.

Thanks for your response, sorry I don't know how to reset the modem router back to default, and what the quicksetup guide is, etc, I also don't know how to backup settings or anything, I'm not that knowledgeable about this. I guess it wasn't a great idea to be doing this when I don't have that much knowledge but I was under the impression it was relatively simple.
For the second part, after I uninstall it from device manager, if I plug my laptop in with an ethernet cable won't I not be able to access the router settings page? (routerlogin.net?) since I'm not connected through that connection anymore? Or did you mean doing it a different way?

It looks like this is a common problem for both Windows 8 and 8.1. You should first try just rebooting the router and the wireless devices. Then if that doesn't work you could try what's outlined here.

The wireless adapter is the one to uninstall , it will re install when you reboot.
The Ethernet Adapter should be ok for you to access the Router via cable.
If you have your Username and Password from your provider then Setup is quite straight forward , or you can check your providers website for any extra settings needed , but the quick setup should get you going.
I assume you can still access the net via ethernet.

Havachat is referring to the quick setup guide disc that came with your router. You put them into your DVD/CD drive and follow the prompts. As far as resetting the router to defaults, there's usually a little button on the back that you push in with a pin, it should say reset. You basically push the button in, unplug it, then plug it back in. You should be able to find out how to do this by searching "reset your router's specific model"

All modems have quicksetup these days in the menu.
Do you have a Modem and a Router as seperate units or all in one ?

So I uninstalled the network adapter, rebooted and found it to be reinstalled like you said. I then tried to connect to my network and it's just the same. "Connection is limited" and I have no internet. I guess I have to do the other thing.
There's a yellow (ethernet? I have no idea) cable going from my router to my modem(?). If I unplug it from the modem end and put it into my laptop then the bars icon changes to a computer icon but it still says just connection is limited, and I have no internet.
I found the reset button and pushed it, then it didn't find the network at all and I wasn't sure what to do from there. I tried connecting manually through the cable and I managed that through the original router password since it reset, but it still says connection is limited after I connect and I have no internet.

Try unplugging from Router end and using that straight to laptop { Ethernet } , if ok then the Modem settings are ok.
You may have to wait for someone to guide you through more info in to the router setup you have.

If I unplug the router end and plug it into my laptop then internet works. But obviously, routerlogin.net doesn't load, so I can't change the settings, so my wireless is still gone.
If possible I just want to go back to wpa because changing to WEP appears to be what destroyed everything and it doesn't even work anyway. Is that possible? What can I do if the router gives no internet, but I need internet to change the settings?
(edit) I think I reset improperly before. I looked up the manual and I reset properly this time, but my computer doesn't find the network now, and there's no further steps in the manual. Now what do i do?
